The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is being built in a circular tunnel 27 km in circumference. The tunnel is buried around 50 to 175 m. underground. It straddles the Swiss and French borders on the outskirts of Geneva.
Nuestro particular big bang
En este blog vamos a seguir el arranque de LHC contado por quienes estan trabajando en los experimentos ATLAS, CMS, LHCb, esperamos que sea de vuestro interés.
LHC - the aim of the exercise:
To smash protons moving at 99.999999% of the speed of light into each other and so recreate conditions a fraction of a second after the big bang. The LHC experiments try and work out what happened.
The aim of the LHC / ILC Study Group is to investigate how analyses at the LHC could profit from results obtained at the ILC and vice versa. It is furthermore studied how informations obtained at both machines can most effectively be put together in order to explore the physics of weak and strong electroweak symmetry breaking, supersymmetric models, new gauge theories, models with extra dimensions, and electroweak and QCD precision physics.
An international team is currently installing the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in a 27-kilometer ring buried deep below the countryside on the outskirts of Geneva, Switzerland . When its operations begin in 2008, the LHC will be the world’s most powerful particle accelerator . Scientists predict that its very-high-energy proton collisions will yield extraordinary discoveries about the nature of the physical universe. Beyond revealing a new world of unknown particles, the LHC experiments could explain why those particles exist and behave as they do. The LHC experiments could reveal the origins of mass , shed light on dark matter , uncover hidden symmetries of the universe , and possibly find extra dimensions of space .
